Byotrol - A New approach to Microbial control

Byotrol plc was established in 1999 to develop a unique range of sanitizing products for industry & the home.

Byotrol has a range of products that can be added into manufacturing processes or used directly to control micro organisms safely.

Micro organisms cause disease, danger,rot and despair, and individually are quite easy to kill. In fact we need them to make bread and beer and for many other uses.

Healthy people and a healthy environment contain a wide range of micro organisms that are practically impossible to eradicate, but in many cases need controlling.

We can't see them, they are microscopic and the main danger comes from unchecked growth. Some species replicate every twenty minutes and that means in perfect conditions 1 cell can become 16,777,216 in 8 hours. And we still cannot see them - A Big Problem

Microbes adapt very quickly

  • they can change their source of nutrition.
  • they can survive hostile environments.
  • they can avoid the action of chemicals.
  • they can produce chemicals that protect them from organisms that may destroy them.

    Byotrol combines a physical effect with a chemical control provided by minute amounts of selected biocides.

    Byotrol's physical properties interfere with the formation of a biofilm substantially reducing the micro organisms ability to reproduce.

    Unable to reproduce, the 'age' of the colony increases as does its vulnerability to chemical controls magnifying the biocides efficacy.

    Physically

    Byotrol's physical properties create high & low surface tension areas on a microscopic scale. This effect cannot be felt by large scale organisms, but it pulls and pushes minute micro organisms about.

    The micro organisms find it very difficult to settle or reproduce. Byotrol, with the addition of some very simple and safe chemicals, speeds up the eradication of the micro organisms. How can chemicals that are this effective be safe? Simple, lets look at what they are and also understand the scale of the operation. We are huge. and they are tiny.

    Chemically

    The molecular backbone of Byotrol has associated with it, by non chemical bonds, a selected group of well understood biocides.

    The effects of the biocides is amplified because they are acting upon micro organisms whose ability to reproduce has been severely impaired and are therefore more susceptible due to their age.

    Byotrol is so effective because

  • it creates a physical effect that stops the microbes from replicating.
  • it impacts upon the microbial demographics increasing the age of the population.
  • the chemicals involved do not need to be aggressive because of the increased vulnerability.
  • and they are safe.

    Chemicals used are:

  • Iso-Thiazalones - used in shampoo
  • Ortho-Phenyl Phenol (OPP'S) - used in soap
  • Quaternary Ammonium Salts (QUATS) - used in cosmetics
  • Byotrol does not contain

  • Antibiotics - over use can lead to resistance
  • Poly Chlorinated Bi-Phenols (PCB's) - dioxin problems
  • Toxic metal salts - tin & copper etc. ~ residue problems
  • Heavy Metals - mercury & lead ~ poisons
  • To reproduce by division the microbes need to affix to a surface forming a calyx. Once attached they can reproduce by budding/vegetative growth. The cell swells and a second identical clone is budded off. Once completed the process repeats.

    If the attachment is prevented the microbes cannot exert a force that permits budding and so cannot reproduce. The microbe starts to age and become more susceptible to Byotrol's safe and effective biocides

    Immobilized Biomass

    Byotrol is a biodegradable biocide!

    Byotrol is a highly stable product mixture in solution and application, however at very high dilution or when immersed in water for 24 hours the material begins to disassociate into it's component parts.

    These provide a carbon source for microbes and are biodegraded into simple molecules.

    Byotrol incorporated in surface coatings rapidly reduces the number of organism present. Compared with a coated panel without Byotrol (control) significant microbial reduction takes place. Aqua-Guard Challenged with B.subtilis. Test performed in 1996
